Press Releases: Good or Bad for SEO?

An time-honored and fairly often-used method of getting links to your website is to use press releases with embedded links in those releases.

With Google constantly changing it’s SEO habits, the question has become: Are Press Releases still a legitimate SEO tactic?

Here is what we have from Matt Cutts of Google in a Google Webmaster Help forum:

“Now, when you do press releases, it might get your web site in front of the eyes of bloggers, reporters and others, where what they write or link to may have an impact on your rankings. But the links within the releases themselves, Google says – they won’t benefit your rankings.”

Now, the best way to get links into your site via press releases is to get media or news sites to do their own writeup afte reading your press release. These links read as true inbound links that register well with search engines, compared to the ones in your original press release that the Google crawler’s can sniff out and a type of spam link.

Website Domain Names

Transferring a company’s domain name is a concern to many before getting started on a website. I just wanted to address how easy it is and how you can make the process easier in this newsletter along with some other good stuff to know about website domain names.

  • First, let me say that I would recommend keeping your domain name if you have one. Especially if you have had a website up and running on it for some time. The reason is because you have built up some online equity with it. The age of your site is one of the factors that goes into where your site will rank in the search engines.
  • If you have a domain, all we need is the FTP (file transfer protocol) information from the company your domain is already registered to. Usually this consists of a username and password. You should have this information saved somewhere in an email. If not, you may want to call them up to retrieve it.
  • If you do not have your FTP information saved somewhere and you cannot get a hold of your current provider, you can always do a who.is look up. Go to this website http://www.whois.sc/ and type the name of your domain in. It will tell you who the website is registered with and most of the time will give you their contact info as well.
  • If you don’t have a website domain name already that is okay. Most companies prefer to have their companyname.com. However, it’s not essential to have that domain if it’s already taken. You can always try to get the .net version, or maybe try a dash in between some of the words.
  • For companies that are concerned with getting more exposure on the web, consider adding some of your keywords into domain name. For example, I was doing a search with a client recently for “Memphis Roofer”. You will find a company on the first page www.roofingmemphis.net. If you look at their website, you can easily tell they did not do much to optimize their site for the search engines, but because they have the keywords “roofing, Memphis” in their domain name, they rank very well for that particular search. Just something to keep in mind.

3 Questions To Ask Before Redesigning Your Website

If you don’t have a website already, then take a look at one of our previous newsletters entitled “How To Get Started On A Website”. For those who do have a website and may be considering a redesign; here are three good questions to ask before you do so.
 
1.     What’s Working? What Isn’t?
 
Technically this is two questions, but you get the idea. Sometimes this isn’t so easy to tell, especially with what’s not working.  Ever have somebody ask you for your website and then never hear from them again? You may know something is not working but probably not know exactly what. What is working on the other hand is much easier. Do you get leads from your site? Do people tell you they like the design, pictures, wording, etc.? Give yourself a pat on the back and make sure you don’t endanger any of these strengths on the redesign.
 
Setting up site analytics could really help you figure this out. It will give you detailed information on how many hits you’re getting, where they come from, what pages they visit, etc. All of our websites can be setup with site analytics if you don’t already have that fyi. It does not cost anything extra and is very easy to install.
 
2.     What Do Your Customers Want?
 
This is where building relationships with clients and having industry connections really helps. Try to get as much feedback as you can, like; What do they find useful? What do they hate? What’s missing? What would absolutely blow them away? To you, a website may just a tool, but for your customers, it can be a very significant part of their overall experience with you.
 
3.     How Could This Make Your Life Easier?
 
Talking to customers is great, but don’t forget your needs should be taking into consideration as well. You may be able to become more efficient with how you present your company (samples of your work, testimonials, etc.) or maybe setup biling through your website so you don’t have to worry about doing it manually. Don’t just look at your website redesign as a necessary evil, but rather an opportunity to possbily streamline your company and become more efficient in the way you do business.

Does Your Website Reflect The Quality Of Your Work?

I talk with hundreds of small business owners every day. Most of them are quality companies that do good work for honest prices…unfortunately you wouldn’t be able to tell that by looking at their websites.

There are a few ways to look at this situation. On one hand you could say, well that means you don’t really need a website to have a good company. On the other hand, I can’t help thinking about what they are missing out on if they were to get quality website, and I’m not just talking about more business.
 
I understand that some companies have all the work they can handle…but what about getting more money per job? What about having a nice reference point that you can be proud of when someone asks to see samples of your work and make sure you are a legitimate company? Would it make your life easier if you could direct potential customers to your website, rather than having to go to their home to show them pictures? How about taking payments online?
 
Here is a good example of the advantage a quality website can give you. My siblings and I were recently in the market for a lawn service. We wanted our mom to have it for mother’s day. My brother and I did some research online, while my sister asked some friends and family. We ended going with a local company we found online. They did not have the lowest price, but they were the most responsive via email and they had the best website. So, we were comfortable they would do a good job and it was convenient for us because we knew they would respond to emails and allow us to make payments online via their website.
 
If you purchase a website with the idea that it will be your company’s savior…you may want to look for another line of work. A website should not be your only way to get new business, but it can be the main factor that leads to taking your business to the next level. It is realistic to think if you play your cards right on the web it could take you from a company just starting out, to a stable company, from a stable company to a good company and from a good company to a great company.

Interview With “As You Like It Painting”

This month we had the pleasure of interviewing one of our long-time customers Tim St. Mary from As You Like It Painting. Tim has had his website with us for about five years now. We thought it would be insightful for him to share some things he was looking for in a web design company when he was making his decision and how things have gone with Web Works ever since.
