Press Releases: Good or Bad for SEO?

An time-honored and fairly often-used method of getting links to your website is to use press releases with embedded links in those releases.

With Google constantly changing it’s SEO habits, the question has become: Are Press Releases still a legitimate SEO tactic?

Here is what we have from Matt Cutts of Google in a Google Webmaster Help forum:

“Now, when you do press releases, it might get your web site in front of the eyes of bloggers, reporters and others, where what they write or link to may have an impact on your rankings. But the links within the releases themselves, Google says – they won’t benefit your rankings.”

Now, the best way to get links into your site via press releases is to get media or news sites to do their own writeup afte reading your press release. These links read as true inbound links that register well with search engines, compared to the ones in your original press release that the Google crawler’s can sniff out and a type of spam link.

Web Works Wants Your Vote

As the presidential election is reaching it’s pinnacle, I thought it would be a good idea to present our case for your vote. I’ll answer a series of questions and open the discussion up for you. So, without further adieu, here are answers to some of the most commonly asked questions and why we think we’re the best web design team for you:

1) Do I really need a website?

That’s a great question, thank you for asking it.

No, you don’t necessarily need a website. There are many small businesses that are successful without one. However, if you plan on being in business for a while, it could really help you out. Many potential customers will want to know if you have a website, where they can see samples of your work, testimonials, etc. It would greatly enhance your company image and if you have interested in generating more revenue, a website can not only help you get more exposure, but more money for each of your jobs as well. A quality website can mean the difference between being a good company and a great company.

2) Why are you the right candidate for the job?

We have a 5 point plan…just kidding Laughing.

We have the experience with over a 1,000 clients across the country.

We have the credibility, we are an accredited member of the BBB and many great testimonials to boot.

We offer peace of mind. Web Works offers a 100% refundable deposit if we are not able to come to an agreement on the look and feel of your website. No contract or long-term agreement that you are locked into.

We even have a referral program. So if you are satisfied with our product and service, you can get money back for referring a friend or family member.

Lastly, we have Steve Starzyk. He once built a website simply by osmosis. He has won the lifetime achievement award…twice. No wait, I was confusing him with the most interesting man in the world.

Seriously though, he really understands what our clients want and is able to provide it to them in an effective and timely manner. And he has a great team supporting him as well.

3) What will you do if elected?

Well, first we will get to know you and your company. Get the specifics down; what you do, where you work, what is important to you. Then send you artwork. Then allow for multiple revisions until you are satisfied. Then build out all your content so you don’t have to do any of it.

Then not only do we launch your website, but we maintain it as well. We will provide a dedicated team for any situation that may arise once your website is live. Need a new picture update? No problem, send it over. Need to add a new email account? No problem, send it over. Want to check your local rankings in the search engines? No problem, let us know which ones they are. There isn’t much we won’t do for you in regard to your website if you choose to elect us.

Hope this was helpful. Feel free to call my direct line 630-406-1684 or email me anytime. Thanks for stopping by.

All the best,

Website Domain Names

Transferring a company’s domain name is a concern to many before getting started on a website. I just wanted to address how easy it is and how you can make the process easier in this newsletter along with some other good stuff to know about website domain names.
  • First, let me say that I would recommend keeping your domain name if you have one. Especially if you have had a website up and running on it for some time. The reason is because you have built up some online equity with it. The age of your site is one of the factors that goes into where your site will rank in the search engines.
  • If you have a domain, all we need is the FTP (file transfer protocol) information from the company your domain is already registered to. Usually this consists of a username and password. You should have this information saved somewhere in an email. If not, you may want to call them up to retrieve it.
  • If you do not have your FTP information saved somewhere and you cannot get a hold of your current provider, you can always do a look up. Go to this website and type the name of your domain in. It will tell you who the website is registered with and most of the time will give you their contact info as well.
  • If you don’t have a website domain name already that is okay. Most companies prefer to have their However, it’s not essential to have that domain if it’s already taken. You can always try to get the .net version, or maybe try a dash in between some of the words.
  • For companies that are concerned with getting more exposure on the web, consider adding some of your keywords into domain name. For example, I was doing a search with a client recently for “Memphis Roofer”. You will find a company on the first page If you look at their website, you can easily tell they did not do much to optimize their site for the search engines, but because they have the keywords “roofing, Memphis” in their domain name, they rank very well for that particular search. Just something to keep in mind.
Hope some of this information helped. Feel free to call or email anytime if you have questions.

3 Questions To Ask Before Redesigning Your Website

If you don’t have a website already, then take a look at one of our previous newsletters entitled “How To Get Started On A Website”. For those who do have a website and may be considering a redesign; here are three good questions to ask before you do so.
1.     What’s Working? What Isn’t?
Technically this is two questions, but you get the idea. Sometimes this isn’t so easy to tell, especially with what’s not working.  Ever have somebody ask you for your website and then never hear from them again? You may know something is not working but probably not know exactly what. What is working on the other hand is much easier. Do you get leads from your site? Do people tell you they like the design, pictures, wording, etc.? Give yourself a pat on the back and make sure you don’t endanger any of these strengths on the redesign.
Setting up site analytics could really help you figure this out. It will give you detailed information on how many hits you’re getting, where they come from, what pages they visit, etc. All of our websites can be setup with site analytics if you don’t already have that fyi. It does not cost anything extra and is very easy to install.
2.     What Do Your Customers Want?
This is where building relationships with clients and having industry connections really helps. Try to get as much feedback as you can, like; What do they find useful? What do they hate? What’s missing? What would absolutely blow them away? To you, a website may just a tool, but for your customers, it can be a very significant part of their overall experience with you.
3.     How Could This Make Your Life Easier?
Talking to customers is great, but don’t forget your needs should be taking into consideration as well. You may be able to become more efficient with how you present your company (samples of your work, testimonials, etc.) or maybe setup biling through your website so you don’t have to worry about doing it manually. Don’t just look at your website redesign as a necessary evil, but rather an opportunity to possbily streamline your company and become more efficient in the way you do business.

Does Your Website Reflect The Quality Of Your Work?

I talk with hundreds of small business owners every day. Most of them are quality companies that do good work for honest prices…unfortunately you wouldn’t be able to tell that by looking at their websites.
There are a few ways to look at this situation. On one hand you could say, well that means you don’t really need a website to have a good company. On the other hand, I can’t help thinking about what they are missing out on if they were to get quality website, and I’m not just talking about more business.
I understand that some companies have all the work they can handle…but what about getting more money per job? What about having a nice reference point that you can be proud of when someone asks to see samples of your work and make sure you are a legitimate company? Would it make your life easier if you could direct potential customers to your website, rather than having to go to their home to show them pictures? How about taking payments online?
Here is a good example of the advantage a quality website can give you. My siblings and I were recently in the market for a lawn service. We wanted our mom to have it for mother’s day. My brother and I did some research online, while my sister asked some friends and family. We ended going with a local company we found online. They did not have the lowest price, but they were the most responsive via email and they had the best website. So, we were comfortable they would do a good job and it was convenient for us because we knew they would respond to emails and allow us to make payments online via their website.
If you purchase a website with the idea that it will be your company’s savior…you may want to look for another line of work. A website should not be your only way to get new business, but it can be the main factor that leads to taking your business to the next level. It is realistic to think if you play your cards right on the web it could take you from a company just starting out, to a stable company, from a stable company to a good company and from a good company to a great company.
To get a better idea of what I’m referring to, take a look at some of our before and afters as well as our testimonials. I think it will give you good insight on the benefits of our websites and the quality of our work.
Web Works would love to assist you in taking your business to the next level. We are a full service company so we make the process extremely easy for you. Give us a call or email today and let me know how we can help.

Web Works SEO Boost Packages

Web Works is excited to announce the addition of some new packages this month which focus on getting you more exposure in the search engines.

We have developed an excellent formula over the years which produces consistent results in the search engines. However, in order to retain our success we need to stay on top of the industry trends and continually work to improve our product.

Below you’ll find details on the new packages we have developed and their benefits.

- Basic – optimization of title tags, meta tags, on page content, keyword research and creation. (Comes with the standard package)

- Local SEO Boost (one time investment of $200) – Includes local link building package. Business profile setup and links from Google Maps, Yahoo Local, Bing Local, The Online Yellow Pages, Yelp and more. You get 15-20 of the best links for local and small businesses. Our network of business profile pages will give you more real estate in the search engine results page.

Links help drive traffic to your site and also give you credibility online so the search engines are more apt to trust your company and place you higher in their rankings. It’s like looking at a road map…you will see the bigger cities have more roads leading into them. Similarly, search engines will rank websites higher that have more links going to their website.

- Business Pro (one time investment of $400) – Social Media setup for Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus & More. 15 high quality links from authority websites. 30 Social Bookmarks. Your choice of video marketing or article creation and submission to over 100 directories. Google analytics setup. This will help you become more interactive with your audience, allow you to connect with them more efficiently as well as be able to track your results.

- Business Pro Plus (one time investment of $400 and an additional $50 a month) – 150 directory submission a month, 50 Social Bookmarks a month, 30 blog comments a month plus Google Analytics setup with monthly reports. This is the type of optimization that companies use who compete in markets across the country. It will give you a major advantage over almost any other local companies.

- Google Adwords Management (25% of your total budget) – We can either assist you in setting up a Google Adwords account or manage the account for you. We charge 25% of your total budget to manage it, with a minimum total of $200 a month. This is the best way to control if your website is on the first page for your search terms. It doesn’t necessarily guarantee clicks or conversions though. Your ads still need to be written well enough so that you stand out from the competition, and your website has to be optimized to convert clicks into calls.

Please let me know if you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment for one of our brief online demos. I would be more than happy to walk you through our process and do some searches with you online to see where there may be opportunities for you to get more exposure online.
